I have listed all the info here and I hope that it will be of help to somebody else who may face the same problem. This was also confirmed in System Information: installed, 16 GB, total, 14.9 GB. I went to Resource Monitor, and Hardware Reserved now shows around 1000MB. After installing the other new RAM stick in Slot 2, the laptop booted up and then voila! Task Manager now shows 16GB. The other remaining RAM stick, I put in Slot 1, and it worked! The laptop booted up properly and 8GB showed (which is correct). Took one, put in Slot 1, power on, no screen, and caps lock light blinks. Left me with the 2 new RAM sticks to try. Guess what? The old 8GB RAM stick does not work in Slot 1. I was left with trying (again) single RAM in Slot 1 since I have confirmed that single RAM in Slot 2 works. Both RAM sticks are new and of the same make/type/speed.
